Guinea Pig Cage Cleaning
One of the most over looked topics and possibly the most important, the cleaning of the cage.
If you own guinea pigs you will know, that if not cleaned out every day, an odor will start to emanate from the cage. We have found Guinea Pigs to be one of the more stinky pets if not properly maintained.
So just how do you clean out a guinea pig cage? This for the consistent cleaner it is not a problem, if properly maintained daily. The cage is cleaned by removing the contents, be it sawdust, newspaper or special cage lining material, whatever is soaking up the pee and catching the pooh, scoop it up, get it out of there, then if the urine was not totally absorbed, (you can tell by the white crusty marks), the area should be scrubed down with diluted bleach dryed and refilled.
However if the task is not exicuted every day, the excrement and uriine will gather collect build into a stinky mass, hard to scrub and scrape off the cage, but don’t forget that guinea pigs are one of the animals that have to eat some their own poop (the lighter ones) in order to get full nutrients from the food, because they are unable to digest them the first time through.
If guinea pigs are cleaned out at the same time every day they will get use to it, hopefully eating what they need before it is removed. For the health of your pets it is essential, to remove all the defecation or bacteria will grow, sometimes if left unattended for a long time, insects can lay eggs and maggots will flourish in a warm damp atmosphere.
So don’t let the days go by, where the cage sits getting stinker and disgusting, keep the cage clean.
