Guinea pigs first arrived in Europe and America from sailors, they brought them into the country and would sell them for one guinea, this is how they got the first part of their name.
The second part ‘pig’ of their name happened because of the comical squealing clatter they make that resembles actual pigs.

Female guinea pigs get along well with each other, two sisters are best. If you wish to breed them, and only then get a male and a female.
Guinea pig cages need to have enough room for movement and playing. Guinea pigs like to stay hidden when they sleep, so make sure that the cage has a place for them to hide. A plastic or wooden structure to make a little bed in will give them a sence of stability. Bedding like shredded paper or hay and line the cage with wood chips or newspaper, for easy cleanup, not Cedar chips though. A large water bottle is required for the guinea pig pet. If there are two guinea pigs consider getting two water bottles. Guinea pigs love to drink water, so make sure that you give them plenty of fresh water every day.
